In the end it was never used but it's interesting to see the different colours and I am keen on the weedy sea dragon as it is one of my favourite animals. Thinking about it this creature looks more like a leafy sea dragon but its name just isn't as good as its weedy cousin.

Here's proof, if proof be need be, that there are such things as ghosts. Here's a photo of me displaying a fantastic Scrabble victory. Nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary when the picture was taken but imagine my surprise when I saw the photo and noticed the fearful apparition that had manifested above the Scrabble board, most probably to admire my score and skillful use of utilising the triple word squares.

I found some old characters I designed for a 3D chat room application a few years back. Sadly it never got realised but if it had it would have been amazing. The characters had all been rendered up and some of them were really off the wall - and that's by my standards. I think we may have been a little to high brow for the intended audience but you have to strive for that. Otherwise where would you be? ITV 2 I suppose. I've gone for a lovely scene of pink dinosaurs battling it out.

The false widow: England's deadliest spider

I saw an interesting clip on the BBC website about the false widow spider. It's supposed to be the most venomous spider in England. It's not at all dangerous, it's up there with the bee. But what I liked about it is the fact that it has a skull emblem on its abdomen. Look at the clip and see for yourself.

Korky & Harry Pooter vs Moldywort

Today was Wednesday so it's Dandy day. I don't know whether this Korky strip had been printed yet, I never see an issue but I presume it has so that it ties in with the Harry Potter mania which is sweeping the country. This was the second page of my first two pager strip for Korky and I think it's one of the best. Korky works best in a longer format and it's so much harder to do a three panel mini strip than a whole page.
I also made the most of Orange Wednesday today (if they can't give me a signal in my flat they can at least give me a free cinema ticket) and went to see the last Harry Potter film. I enjoyed it on the whole and it was good to see everyone cheering Julie Walters - that so rarely happens in the cinema. That said, I hate it when people applause at the end of a film but it was different during the action as we were all caught up in the excitement.

Pokémon Print

Look at these beauties. I'm very pleased with these. I've recently thrown myself into screen printing and I'm starting to get to grips with the sciences of colour seperation and registration rather than rely on a technician. This is my latest design - a collection of twelve images based on early Gameboy graphics.

I have a run of 20 of these and I'm selling them off dead cheaply.

£10 if you're here in the UK or £15 if you're abroad and that's with the postage.

As you can see from the images, some of these prints and pretty straightforward, simple prints whereas others are more experimental with odd colours and multiple squidgee swipes so let me know which end of the spectrum you'd prefer. I think I like the less conventional ones best.

Ages ago I was asked to submit a design to Ryz for a shoe design. I went for a couple of traditional evergreen Corbett favourites as I know how these things work. Here's a picture of them but they never got past this stage as I don't think I was as street (do the kids still use that phrase? You know what I mean though don't you?) as I needed to be for their fan base.

20 Years of Sonic

It's 20 years today since Sonic the Hedgehog appeared on the Sega Megadrive. I thought I'd draw a little Sonic Scene to celebrate this fact.

I was blown away when I first saw Sonic and it was the reason I bought a Megadrive. This was like playing a cartoon (although I first though that when I saw Atari's Peter Pack Rat in a seaside arcade) and I had to get a Megadrive. I was working at the Little Chef then so money was no object.

I think there and then I decided I wanted to work in games. I started university a few months later and then about five years along the road, that is what I was doing... for about two years..!

Newton the Newt from 1989

I'm at my parent's house at the moment and while I was rescuing a load of my old books and (I like to think) priceless comics that are getting damp and ruined in their garage I came across some illustrations that I did for Warwickshire Wildlife Trust. I think I'd date this around 1989 while I was doing my Art Foundation.

This was part of a conservation pack and it was created without the aid of a computer, just photocopies and Letraset transfers. Imagine that! I used to draw the adventures of Newton the Newt in a cartoon strip in their newsletter but the Nature Areas Pack was quite a big project.

I think my biggest stylistic change has been the positioning of the characters eyes. These days I'm more biologically accurate and don't like them to be touching each other. Their eyes would never work with sockets like that and I'm a stickler for realism as you very well know.

Of course, this isn't entirely true, I am an adonis but the gym show never happened. Well not yet but it still may as my gym which I visit sporadically are up for it. When it does, I don't think I'll go down this route which is why I'm posting it up. However I do like the hilarious Mussel Beach pun, which works so well as the gym is on the beach. It's always a treat to hook up with one of my favourite cohorts, Holly from A Little Stranger. You must have heard about her amazing guinea pig plushies, Hey Cavey by now. Well it's been a year since Hey Cavey has been around and to celebrate she's putting on a show in Holborn at the Fleet River Bakery on Thursday. There are some super unique cavies at this show designed by me and other top notch artists such as Peskimo, Lunartik, Jam Factory and other movers & shakers which have all been realised by Holly and given the cuddly treatment at which she excels. Here's what I came up with for the show:

My offering is a Calamari Cavey terror of the deep. I love how she's done the tentacles - adorable. This abomination of nature could be yours so get over to Ebay and get bidding now. Swimming with dolphins

It was one of my favourite Korky strips in last week's Dandy where he fulfills his ambition to go swimming with dolphins. Unbelievably this was the only time the editor asked me to make a change. In the story I was basically having the dolphins break all the rules on that sign of things not to do on the poster that was in all the swimming pools in the 70s & 80s. The original poster is below but looking at it again it's not heavy petting that isn't allowed, it's just petting. So yes, maybe I did go too far. But kudos to The Dandy for letting me run fast and loose with Korky. It's a rare treat to have so much freedom, especially with such a venerable character. My other clients could learn a lot from them...

No water fountains on Brighton front

Today is voting day so it's interesting to see how all that will turn out. The other week the Labour candidate called round the flat to canvas and I got her in to show her my idea. I had it a few weeks ago and someone in Hove council seemed vaguely interested in it until they stopped replying to my calls. My idea is to put up water fountains on the front and stop people buying bottled water which is a little wasteful. I even roughed up a little logo for them to try and sell this idea. She said it was pointless because of corporate water bottling culture. It seemed all her political zeal has been knocked out of her before she's even in a place of power. Needless to say didn't get my vault - which was a shame as she seemed quite nice.

Pictoplasma 2011

I'm just back from Pictoplasma in Berlin. It was there, two years ago where I vowed to start this blog and here I am, still blogging away like a good 'un.

It was a great Pictoplasma this year and I had loads of fun with chums both new and old. It was very inspiring and new plots have been instigated which I very much hope to follow up on. My main gripe about the conference though is no matter how great and artist is, if they are no good at public speaking or are suffering with the language without using an interpreter they shouldn't be booked to talk.

While in Berlin I was reminded of the Bunny mandala. I have a couple of rabbits secreted away in this poster that Pictoplasma produced a few years ago. See if you can spot them.

Lunartik Mini Tea Tour

Look at me, freshly bathed, wrapped in my dressing gown, nibbling at a couple of mini egg cakes busily working away on a Saturday night. The reason why - I need to clear my desk so I can swan off to Berlin and live it up with the Pictoplasma set.

While there I will be staying at the luxurious 5 star Hotel Lunartik. The highlight has to be the launch party of his Mini Tea Tour. You may have noticed that he did have a cameo in Andy Fanton's Boo strip last week and this week he finally gets his own story. I say story, it's basically the old 'Waiter, Waiter' joke repeated in a variety of hilarious ways. But I think he's worthy of bigger adventures so we'll see how he goes and if you could tell the Dandy how ace he is he may find his way into regular comic employment.

I can hardly take any credit for this as everything that Holly makes is amazing and as always it's a pleasure to do anything with her... which reminds me, I wonder if we can post anything on that other top secret colab we did last year, I must find out as it'll be a shame if no one apart from our lucky eyes get to see it.

I'm currently tweaking the Mini Gay Boyfriend graphics for the Mini Gay Girlfriend version. I came across this as I was trawling through the artwork and it made me smile so I thought I'd post it up for you. I did a little biro sketch on the train the other day and I quite liked it so I coloured it in on a computer so that I could put it on here. I don't know what I was thinking as I absentmindedly doodled it, but the rest of the page was filled with pictures of rotting animals too. They were all pretty rubbish though.

Is it today that's the real Chinese New Year? Was I premature? That's not like me at all. Well Happy New Year again. This is a detail from those sexy pants I did last year. I used to have a pet rabbit when I was little. I never touched it. I couldn't, it was so violent. My dad used to have to get it out of its hutch with the gardening gloves for protection when we had to clean it out. Never was there such relief in the Corbett household when it finally died and its reign of terror came to an end.

I'm working through an idea to make something with the most ridiculous eyes ever and I like the way these critters are going. There's a lovely 70s vibe happening here and I think the thing on my left was my subconscious crying out for Barnaby the Bear, who I'm going to google now to see if he did look like that - but I think he was red. Korky vs Tron

It's Wednesday so that means it's Dandy Day! Today's Korky the Cat story sees our feline chum enter the virtual realm of the computer world. It's a bit like Tron but more mundane. Although, now that I've seen the film I could argue against that. This was a fun story to do as I got to jazz up Korky's look with a neon/rubber sci-fi suit.

Also in this issue there's another Sheriff of Dottingham puzzle and Bear Thrills' adventures continue, not to mention all the great strips that other people do. And for only £1.50 it's a bargain price for the best comic around.
